I’m finally getting around to covering my recent trip to MotoGP Indy.
My friend Bruce and I took the red-eye out of Atlanta Thursday night getting to our hotel about 1 AM. Friday morning dawned warm and sunny as we made it to the track for the first practice sessions. Good day of on track action. Picked up the new Ben Spies book that evening and got Ben to sign it. Dinner that night at ‘The Tamale Place’. Good stuff !!
Saturday saw more practice and qualifying with Spies placing second on the grid behind Casey Stoner. Did the MotoPod meet-up during the lunch break and that evening we took part in the fan pit walk where I got some good pics and got to speak briefly with Moto2 rider Scott Redding. That night we went to the flat track races Mid-America Speedway. With the cancellation of the Indy Mile some of the AMA National riders showed up with Jared Mees taking the win in the main.
Sundays weather was the best of the weekend as we were treated to the sights and sounds of the top level of motorcycle roadracing in the world. Ben Spies had a bad opening lap and dropped back in the field but fought back for a third place finish behind Dani Pedrosa and winner Stoner. Colin Edwards Jr had a solid top ten run but unfortunately Nicky Hayden had an awful race encountering tire problems and finishing off of the lead lap. We caught the early bird back to the ATL Monday morning capping off a great trip.
